Hockey Rink
The hockey rink has been flooded now for the last couple of months, and the ice is in great shape. A special thanks to Bernard Stehelin, and Gerry Coukell for regularly clearing the snow from the rink so that the city is able to resurface the ice. If anyone would like to utilize the warming hut at the rink, please contact Nick Akers ( 1-867-333-6425) to make arrangements.
New trashcans
Based on input from Crestview residents regarding better access to dispose of dog waste/litter on the trails, the CCA purchased two new bearproof containers and dog waste bag dispensers that were installed at two separate trail entrances. One container is located in the northern part of the neighbourhood at the top of Crag road, and the other is located at the top of Azure road in the southern part of the neighbourhood. Now residents can access dog waste bags along the greenbelt trail from two more locations in addition to the dispenser/trash bin located at the park. A special thanks to the City of Whitehorse Parks and Community Development department for accommodating our requests, and for installing and maintaining these two new receptacles. The CCA appreciates all of the interest expressed in keeping our trails/community clean, and look forward to assisting any other interested residents in making Crestview a great place to live!
The Beaver Dam
I'm sure most of you have noticed the bigger than large beaver dam that has been growing behind the southern part of the neighbourhood. Although the dam itself is impressive, it's also causing quite a bit of damage to the adjacent trail. The CCA ( Crestview Community Association) members discussed the different means of dealing with the damage created by the dam at the Annual General Meeting held back in 2014. The most obvious resolution that was mentioned involved trapping the beavers, and demolishing the dam. However, resident Mike Ivens approached the CCA with a proposal to resolve the problems created by the dam using a "water leveling" system that had been used in other areas with great results. In addition to his proposal he committed to spearheading the project and submitting an application for a CDF (Community Development Fund) to the Yukon Government. After considering Mike's proposal, the CCA agreed it'd be worthwhile to see if the system would indeed be a sustainable way of managing the beaver problem in Crestview and potentially territory wide. After receiving the greenlight from the CCA, Mike Ivens organized all of the necessary information (which is no simple task) and thanks to Mike the project was awarded the CDF. The company contracted to install the "Beaver Deceiver" system is Yucan Planning, and as of Wednesday June 10th they're projected date for installation of the device will be between now and the end of the month. The general idea of the system, is that beavers are attracted to the sound of moving water. In this system the pipe intake will be surrounded by a cage so that the beavers won't be able to dam it shut, and the top of the pipe will be set into the pond at a height determined to prevent the overflow currently causing all the trail damage. There are a lot of people very interested to see if this system in fact will remedy the problems created by this specific dam, and we sincerely hope that it does. If at some later date we as a community reach a different conclusion, then other options will have to be explored. See the images and links following for more information on the strategy being implemented.
